Pros & Cons of Hardwood Refinishing

First of all, sanding your wood floors can help remove dents, scratches, and other damage by taking off a bit of the top layer. This process also allows the wood to be stained in a new color, with many stain options available.

Each time you sand, you remove about 0.5 – 1.5 mm from the top layer, so it’s important to know how many times your specific hardwood can handle this process according to its specifications.

Sandless Wood Floor Refinishing (Buffing & Polishing)

Sandless Hardwood Refinishing is great for wood floors that are in good condition but need a little update. This method involves lightly scuffing the floor with a sanding machine (floor buffing) and applying a special chemical to the surface. Minor damages are fixed before adding a new finish coat. This process, also called hardwood buffing or polishing, does not involve full sanding.

This method is considered medium intensive. It is faster and less costly than traditional sanding. It doesn’t remove much of the top layer, but it’s not completely dust-free, so expect a little dust in your home. Sandless refinishing won’t get rid of deep scratches and dents and doesn’t allow for floor staining.

Wood Floor Refinishing & Restoration Via Deep Cleaning & Recoat

This is a gentle and eco-friendly way to clean an old wood floor without sanding or losing any wood.

Hardwood recoating gives the same results as traditional refinishing with no wood loss. You can choose finishes like matte, satin, or gloss, all dust-free. Hardwood recoating works best on floors in good condition with few or no damages.

Many people use hardwood recoating services every few years to extend their floor’s protective layer and avoid refinishing. Most hardwood floors can be refinished a few times, but recoating helps maintain them and saves money over time.
